Oberlin College shut down when hate signs were posted around the campus. The perpetrators, Dylan Bleier and Matt Alden are progressives who referred to the criminal act as a "joke." Police did not press charges and the college said Friday that "both students are going through the school's disciplinary system."
It seems that hate crimes are dependent on the perpetrator.
The AP via the Washington Post reported yesterday that the anti-Islam fliers posted and the "display of a large Nazi flag" by a creepy "Organizing for Action" volunteer were designed to "provoke a reaction." According to the AP,
"A second student detained the same day denied helping make a swastika banner placed in the center and also denied he knew what his friend was up to, saying he was just tagging along, according to his statement."
The interesting thing about all this is the reaction of the university, as well as the local police. They knew it was hoax, yet they allowed the mainstream media to continue reporting about the hate crimes.
Cornell University law professor William Jacobson "tracked the Oberlin story" on Legal Insurrection.
"School officials and local police knew the identity of the culprits, who were responsible for most if not all of such incidents on campus, yet remained silent as the campus reacted as if the incidents were real."
On Friday, Oberlin College released a statement specifically addressing the "racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic incidents" on campus, saying "We will not tolerate acts of hatred and threats of violence regardless of motivation."
In January, Anthony Garcia, 23, was charged with a "felony hate crime" for "spray painting anti-gay graffiti on campus buildings" at UC Berkeley.
These kids don't even get expelled, much less arrested.
