Timothy Geithner: If GOP Does Not Tax the Rich, Dems Willing to Go Over "Fiscal Cliff"

Timothy Geithner made it clear that if the GOP will not abide with the administration's growth killing "tax the rich" proposal, the Democrats will allow all Americans to suffer by going off the "fiscal cliff," while surely pointing fingers at the Republicans as being "obstructionists" in the process.

Geithner is only repeating what the president has made clear from the beginning. Allow the Bush-era tax cuts to expire for the rich as a part of the negotiation to end the "fiscal cliff", or else the Democrats are willing to let everyone suffer, as reported by USAToday. This, despite the fact that the tax would hurt growth, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.

He also indicated that there would be no talks to reform Social Security, despite the desperate need to do so. His sentiment has been echoed by other Democrats, who resist any reform to these programs that are crushing America's economy and make it crystal clear that the only "obstructionists" are the Democrats who refuse to be fiscally responsible.

Geithner also has indicated that there should be no debt-ceiling, because he does not want the "drama". Allowing unlimited increases to debt incurred by the federal government is a great way to ensure that she will forever be in debt. Are these people out of their minds?

As reported by Politico, under Timothy Geithner's plan, "the president would have the authority to unilaterally raise the debt ceiling at any time." This would take power away from congress, which is taking power away by the people, who are represented by those in Congress. Surely the founding fathers would be turning over in their graves.

Isn't it interesting that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and President Obama opposed the debt ceiling increases in 2006 under President George W. Bush? Americans need to wake up to the very real damage the federal government is imposing by such unabashed spending and complete disregard for any spending restraint.

In sum, the Democrats will allow no discussion of entitlement reform, want an unlimited debt ceiling, and will not accept any policy that does not include a growth-hurting plan of taxing the wealthy. What do they want? Well, they want "credit" for one billion dollars of previous cuts (where?), as pointed out by Harry Reid. A billion dollars, by the way, accounts for .09 percent of the annual deficit. They are not serious, right? America can do better than these clowns, but will they wake up before it is too late?

President Obama is in the driver's seat and will have the Republican on their knees. Their corporate masters have already spent, and loss millions in the Nov. election. They can't afford to take another hit, so they'll suck it up and pay up their fair share and crack the whip on their Republican puppets to get in line.

Richard, thank you for your comment. Here are some facts 1.)Raising the tax rate for the rich will hurt growth and cost 200k jobs. 2.) Raising taxes on the income of people who make 250k per year is only going to hurt those actively making money (ie, producing people, employing people) - it has nothing to do with other types of income, like investment income. 3.) The top earners pay 94% of the total "revenue" taken in by the government (how much is "fair")? 4.) So we raise the tax rate for higher earners - where will that money go? It will go to a big, bulky, wasteful government that squanders a ridiculous amount of money and cannot even manage to keep what they spend within the limits of what the receive from the taxpayer (deficit), and so do you know what they do? They print money and borrow money from China (debt). I am not sure what raising Mitt Romney's tax rate will do - taking all of the money (100%) from all of the wealthy in America will only put a miniscule dent in the unsustainable debt. We are not addressing the real problems by targeting the rich (which is pure politics and will not help America), the real problems are wasteful spending and unsustainable entitlement programs.

The CBO did not only say that taxing the wealthy would hurt growth and cost jobs (this point infuriates me, because of the media spin on that info was that taxing the wealthy won't "kill" growth or won't hurt growth "much") but they also said that going over the fiscal cliff WILL mean a recession, with even more unemployment. When did America turn into Greece? And I suspect that the class warfare situation will not improve if that does occur - they will be even more of a target...

I know I am weird, but I always said that if I won the lottery (which would be impossible, since I don't play), I would give away every cent because I want to make my own fortune. Ya, The leaders in Detroit want payback for voting about 75% for a Obama. They are bankrupt, and have about 3 million in the bank and have no way to pay off contracts and pensions. The Governor had the ability to appoint a manager to go in and attempt a light version of a bankruptcy but Detroit fought it tooth and nail. They think that the governor and the president should just send money. Soon they will realize that no one has any money and they will have to deal with a real bankruptcy judge.

Allowing the president to raise the debt limit seems very unconstitutional. Article says congress has the power to lay taxes, borrow money, pay debts etc. this seems like it covers setting a debt ceiling as well.

Any sane person has realized that we left the cliff edge when we started to increase our own debt limit after writing about 100 Trillion in IOU’s and then started to print money to try to hide our heads. We spend so much time talking about pennies that we waist and ignore the billions that we borrow by the minute. Where is the honesty? Honesty from our leaders, honesty from the media that is supposed to be the watchdog and the honesty when we think that one party or the other will fix the problem. Just look at a newborn, she owns over one Million dollars of debt the second she is born. That money was spent on Medicare, Social security and other underfunded liabilities, in addition to the debt. Don’t trust me, do the math yourself. Add it all up and then divide by the number of tax payers… If she decides to work at pay taxes at all. She does not have to. What is the incentive? Maybe everyone should just quit working, except you. Are you going to pay for the bill that is coming due? There is no way that one person can pay for it all. There is no way for any 10, 20 or even 20 thousand people to pay for it all. Those are just more lies. Yes elections have consequences and we once had a free country based on principles of hard work and honesty. Then we elected someone who wanted fundamental change. So now we have traded our freedom for the promises of politicians who lie. For years ago I asked “what does freedom look like after fundamental change”? Well we are about to find out as our elected representatives light the fuse, rather than pulling the rip cord. The question now is are you going to be the person on TV crying because everything has been destroyed and the government is not able to help? Or are you going to be the one who structures his life ahead of time to prepare for the impact?

I went deep sea snorkeling once in the Galapagos. I saw a shark. If you were there with me, you would have heard me shout underwater. Kind of like, "BLUBGLUBBLUG!!!"

I'm afraid not, Renee. Petrol goes stale after a bit. That is why they make additives for over-Winter storage...Sta-Bil!
