Mitt Romney's disappointment on the campaign trail stops with him and only him as he tries to woo voters ahead of November's general election. Whether he is making $10,000 bets or praising two Cadillacs for his wife, Romney told the Wall Street Journal he only finds himself unhappy by his own mistakes.
"The only time I'm unhappy is if I've done something that hurt the prospects for the success of our effort.... It's mostly disappointment with myself that causes me to be most concerned," Romney told interviewer Peggy Noonan.
For the first time in the 2012 campaign, voters finally get to hear a candidate speak candidly about his mistakes. No one expects perfection from either the GOP or Democratic choice for president. But to actually hear one of the candidates admit he is human ahead of the biggest campaign of his life is staggering. Next we'll see the book title "Mitt Romney's Disappointment" or "The Unhappiness of Romney".
The candidate isn't in politics for the money. He also told Noonan he loves developing relationships with voters "not reflected in statistics." It sounds like Romney learned from his 2008 campaign when he watched then-Sen. Barack Obama take American voters by storm. But the key question remains—can Romney connect with ordinary people? That's nice that he sits down and converses with citizens on the campaign trail. But will Romney's big money attitude keep middle class voters away?
Romney also told the media outlet his verbal gaffes "haunt me a lot." If he keeps saying things such as "I like to fire people", then the only person Romney has to blame for failure is himself. Perhaps the campaign needs more meet-and-greets and less television interviews. Otherwise, the headlines the evening of Nov. 6 will read "Mitt Romney's disappointment continues four years later."
