After a heated discussion, where Matthews uses the terms "flat earther" to describe Republican Candidate Mitt Romney, who also claims "does not believe in science" or "evolution," Matthews casually calls the GOP the "Grand Wizard Crowd." Michael Steele did not let him get away with it.
The exchange was as follows, as reported by RealClearPolitics:
"I resent that. What is this 'grand wizard' nonsense?" Steele asked.
"I should say the far-right party," Matthews retorted.
"Are you saying that we're the Ku Klux Klan? Give me a break. Don't go there with me on that," Steele warned.
"Okay. Great. Good. Thank you," Matthews cracked. "There's none of those problems over there. All those birthers out there."
"Oh my gosh," Steele could be heard saying.
Chris Matthews has made name-calling an art; he called Tea Party Republicans as a group of baby-kidnapping terrorists and once stated, "Well, the GOP has become the Wahhabis of American government," referring to radical Islam.
Regarding man-made Climate Change, Mitt Romney has stated, "My policy is not to impose trillions of dollars in costs and job killing measures like cap and trade and carbon taxes on the American people." Mitt's book, "No Apology: Believe in America," has a chapter devoted to Mitt's views on energy and about the climate, and his plan for energy is outlined on his website.
Marginalizing the competition by name-calling is not helping political discourse. In March, President Obama also called those who do not support yet more failed green stimulus in favour of drilling for domestic oil "Flat Earthers." President Obama could really help promote civil discourse by being a good example for the Chris Matthews of the world, who resort to name calling regularly and contribute strongly to polarization.
The exchange could be seen from MSNBC:

He is experiencing intellectual meltdown.
More to come in the following months!
As Frederick Douglass said, "It is a frequent and favorite device of an indefensible cause to misstate and pervert the views of those who advocate a good cause."
He likes to hear himself talk, and surrounds himself with idiots of the same opinion.
Apparantly in making the above statement, you are unaware that Michrael Steele is a paid contributing staff member of the MSNBC TV Network, which would make him one of those Chris Matthew's idiots you refer to in your comment.
If you are going to make comments which you hope will show someone in a bad light or be disparaging to a particular person, then it would behoove you to do your homework prior to making the statement.
Otherwise, you, as with this time, end up being the blunt of your own asinine stupidity.
Haahahaaahahahaaha!!!!!
Its funny!
No way, not you, never make me believe it. We who have crossed debating swords with you here on Gather News will never believe that you have become a Loudmouth Chris and/or a Big Ed television show viewer. Surely, you jest.
However, as for me and how I feel about having you join us liberals in the viewing audience, you would certainly be welcome anytime. You may even learn to enjoy the nightly conservative bashing by these guys. Hell, it's fun, entertaining and sometimes even informative.
Have you ever noticed that Leftists simply are not funny and have no sense of humour?
Hang-Dog, the lot of them...
All of these shows are hosted by excessively overpaid commentators who are skilled in the art of bullying, intimidating and coercing nightime guest, to the delight of the television audience. If you will take note, the host are always joined in debating the subject issue by either paid contributing guest who have the opposit mindset in political ideology and/or politicians sharing the host's ideology. Either way, they are serving up the proverbial red meat dinner to the majority of their viewing audience. I say majority, because there are some like me, who are not red meat eaters. Who however, do occasionally watch just to get a laugh at the absurdity of what is being said by both the host and the guest in their back and forth adversarial banter.
As to Juan Williams, Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs and all the dozen or more who have lost their talk show host jobs over the past 10 years, I don't let it worry me one bit about their hosting demise. They have all moved on to more financially lucrative jobs, than I could have ever imagined a person being paid for acting like an asinine individual in front of an audience. You can bet your bottom dollar on one thing, not a single one of those fired host are standing in the welfare line nor hurting financially in any way shape or form. Nope, they are doing just fine in their new jobs.
In all honesty, I would be willing to bet that the majority of conservatives who got all upset about Juan Williams being fired, had probably never had even heard of Mr. Williams prior to his being hired by Fox News Network. I knew of him because, I occasionally watched CSPAN 1 & 2 a production of the PB Network. But, as I said, there is not many, if any, red meat individuals who ever watch those channels since those type of talk shows are meant to be bipartisan in nature.
Food for thought, If you are worried about so and so getting fired and someone else in a similar job not getting fired, Get real, When was life ever fair ???
I believe that the majority of those who watch MSNBC or FOX Network television political talk shows religiously (nightly) are seeking hard core (red meat) political bashing of whichever political party they are opposed to.
{i.e.} Those watching Chris Matthews or Ed Shultz shows etc. are doing so in order to hear conservatives effectively denegrated by the shows host and/or paid contributing commentary guest. The same is true of those who watch shows hosted by Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly etc. They are wanting to hear the nightly bashing of liberals by those host. In my opinion, it's a quasi anti social behavior by both the shows host as well as those who obtain some sort of satisfaction and/or personal enjoyment from watching such intelligent lowering entertainment.
Whereas, those few who are concerned about or who are interested in real Washington politics and the state of politics in America in general and not into political party bashing. But rather, are people who watch shows produced on Public Broadcasting Networks and/or CSPAN Networks 1 &2.
Therefore, since Juan Williams was a commentator on CSPAN Television and never on FOX News until he was fired by CSPAN and then hired by FOX, it would be my assessment that few FOX viewers had ever heard of him before his appearance on FOX. As such, all this hoopla over Williams being fired by CSPAN is totally without merit and nothing more than pure contrived nonesense.
Liberals did fire Juan Williams nor any other conservative talk show host nor did conservatives fire Keith Olbermann or any other Liberal talk show host. They, and all such journalist who have lost their jobs, did so for violating some part of their contractual agreement with their employer. Therefore, for viewers to blame another source or some segment of the American people for those firings is not only senseless, it's ludicris in logical reasoning.
Further, the attitude displayed by some members here on Gather News, demonstrates the ill effect that such television talk shows have upon nightly viewers. Debating here on G.N. has turned into making ridiculous charges and counter charges of being un American by debating parties. Name calling has become an acceptable manner in which to address an opponent.
The real sad part is that the name calling has become so sickening in nature, with personal attacks by Americans upon fellow Americans, becoming an almost acceptable manner in which to debate an opponent. Some of those names which have been used to describe others having an opposit ideological point of view are, Communist, Marxist, Nazist, Socialist, Stalinist, Leninist, Fascist and Klanist. All of which were at some point in time during our history our country's sworn ideological and combative enemies. Enemies to which hundreds of thousands of American Men and Women lost their lives and/or were injured or maimed in fighting those factions in foreign wars. The exception being that of the KKK which was, and still is, an ongoing domestic war of/in the individual ideology of some era regressive Americans.
I would ask that you forgive my long winded response to your comment. I only did so in an attempt to clarify my position on the issue.
Read my comments carefully and you will not find any reasoning for your response to my post. You are making the mistake of reading that which you want to read, not that which was written.
Whether or not I am a Liberal or Libertarian is not the focus nor the context of my posted comment, regardless of your obvious attempts to read such in my comments.
I am a Liberal in ideology and a progressive on most social issues, but that does not exclude me from thinking and reasoning on a bipartisan level. However, you having jumped to the conclusion that my chosen political ideology in some way effects my being able to see both sides of an issue, clearly demonstrates that in reality, it is you, not I, who thinks with a closed mind and is unable to be objective.
The MSNBC "Hardball With Chris Matthews" show, which is hosted by Chris Matthews is not an actual News Reporter show. But rather, it is a political and current event entertainment type show and Matthews does not assume the position of a news reporter, but instead assumes the role of a biased political commentator.
Both the titled show and it's host are very similar in style and substance as that of the television show hosted by Sean Hannity on the Fox News TV Network. Neither of these host nor their adversarial guest can be viewed as being non biased nor non partisan in their commentary and/or their politically pointed guest interviews. It is their job to be more adversarial towards their guest in order to encourage their nightly guest into a debate on the topic of the issue being discussed.
Know your subject before getting all upset over nothing.
THE DARING!
THE OUTRAGEOUSNESS!
THE INSOLENCE!
THE ARROGANCE!!
How dare blacks think they have a right to free thought and free political expression? They were taught repeatedly by white liberals how to think. What gives them the right to question white liberals? I just can't believe that blacks think they are free!
Well stated, Char.
I say, Not So
It is the employers who decide which employee (talk show host) is retained and which is dismissed. Opponents to the style of the commentor may protest in any number of ways, the host's continued appearance on television and/or radio. However, it is the employer and the employer alone who determines the host's ultimate fate, not the protesters. Although some thought may be given a certain amount of consideration in the employer's final decision.
Actually, if the viewing audience (You Guys) approves of the way in which the talk show host's conducts the commentary show, then those viewers should write letters, place phone calls etc to the television/radio station, it's sponsors and the management. To simply blame opponents for doing the same thing is not taking responsibility for failing to some sort of action to support that and those which you believe in.
So what if there was a consorted effect by those with opposing ideology (Liberals) to get network sponsors to discontinue their financial support of a host and his show, you had the same opportunity do do the same thing and did nothing until it was too late. So don't cry foul now, it was your own non action which may well have helped your talk show host to loose his job and the show to end.
BTW: Renee, you can not compare paid for television, private owned radio broadcast and standard tele/radio broadcast, all three are managed and air under different rules and regulations of/by the FCC.
