In an unbelievably hypocritical move, President Obama's Twitter account started the hashtag #WhatsRomneyHiding (trending at #1) based on GOP candidate Mitt Romney's legal refusal to disclose the nature and extent of his holdings. The Twitter account is run by Obama 2012 campaign staff with the president's approval.
Campaign manager Jim Messina released a statement on the BarackObama.com website today outlining what Romney is doing and why they don't like it. Regarding Romney releasing his tax information to the McCain campaign back in 2008, it says, "He must meet that same standard now so that the American people may judge whether he would be a suitable President, and whether there are any conflicts of interest that could cloud his judgment."
The irony of that statement isn't lost on users on Twitter. Response tweets included things like:
- "#WhatsRomneyHiding Obama's college records,"
- "Oh...I got this...#WhatsRomneyHiding is grades, his transcripts, his past shady associations. Oh WAIT,"
- "I'm not sure the president wants to get into a "not releasing info battle #WhatsRomneyHiding"
- #whatsromneyhiding Obama's sealed college records and travel records
Someone in the campaign office didn't think this one through! The hashtag #WhatsObamaHiding quickly took the number one spot away from #WhatsRomneyHiding. In fact, it knocked it off of the trending list. Next time, they should give a bit more thought to the hashtags they use, especially when it points out that your boss is a raging hypocrite!
