As President Obama talks a tax increase on America's rich, a new audit reveals that the Federal Government bought $16 muffins over the past two years. In addition, the same report found $10 cookies and $8 coffee. What is wrong with this picture?
Extravagant Conferences for Department of Justice
While $8 coffee may not seem as much of a stretch as the others, at least to some Starbucks aficionados, the $16 muffins and $10 cookies are obviously out of control. Who ever pays that much for a single muffin or cookie? In 2008 and 2009, the Department of Justice bought $250 muffins at a price of $16 each. In fact, the department spent a total of $121 million on conferences in those two fiscal years, which was above its spending limit.
Senator Chuch Grassley Weighs In on Wasteful Spending
Ultimately, this is wasteful spending, and many Americans are not willing to put up with higher taxes or budget cuts in the midst of this type of frivolous purchase. Senator Chuck Grassley said, "Sixteen dollar muffins and $600,000 for event planning services are what make Americans cynical about government and why they are demanding change. People are outraged, and rightly so." He also said that the DOJ "appears to be blind to the economic realities our country is facing."
Is This Why Americans Must Pay Fair Share?
He is absolutely right. How dare people be told that they have to pay their "fair share" when the so-called "fair share" is being squandered this way. The only people who can be happy about these outrageous $16 muffins are the people who got the government to pay that sky-high price for them. They should be ashamed too.
Are you in the least bit surprised to hear about this level of extravagance and wasteful spending at the DOJ? Honestly it seems to fit right in with what the U.S. government has been doing for a long time.
