Graduating seniors with Ohio State University are livid at the prospect of having John Boehner speaking at their graduation commencement.
Prior to the actual graduation ceremony on June 12, there will be a protest at 11 a.m. for those who wish to participate. The theme? "Don't CUT our future!" According to the protest's Facebook page, during the actual commencement ceremony, participants in the protest will turn their backs to Boehner while displaying a sticker on their caps with the aforementioned phrase. In tandem with this, an alternative commencement has been organized later in the day so that graduates will be able to enjoy commencement without sitting through Boehner's bonehead remarks.
Students are angry with Boehner for his support of various budget cuts that hurt not only students, but the needy and poor. The alternative commencement page makes the groups distaste for Boehner clear:
This is the man leading the assault on the American public; his politics cut public services, restrict women's rights, loosen regulations on environmental protection and especially target public education- like the education we celebrate on commencement day. By supporting billions in bonuses for Big Oil CEOs, but simultaneously proposing massive cuts to our education system, Boehner is selling our future. Now THAT'S something to cry about.
This isn't the first time Boehner's commencement speech has been sharply criticized. In fact, a group of professors at Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. sent an open letter to him detailing just how far against his voting record goes against the teachings of the Bible. The letter states:
Mr. Speaker, your voting record is at variance from one of the church's most ancient moral teachings...From the apostles to the present, the magisterium of the church has insisted that those in power are morally obliged to preference the needs of the poor. Your record in support of legislation to address the desperate needs of the poor is among the worst in Congress. This fundamental concern should have great urgency for Catholic policy makers. Yet, even now, you work in opposition to it.
Mr. Boehner has supported cutting funding for Medicare, Medicaid, and the W.I.C. program while giving preferential tax cuts to large corporations that bring in billions of dollars per year. And while the man with the perpetually orange face is telling the nation that Americans need to tighten our belts and make sacrifices, he received 22 percent more money in annual checks than he did for the previous year. While Nancy Pelosi and other members of Congress are forgoing expense payments.
It comes as no surprise then, that Ohio State University students and their supporters are outraged at the choice of commencement speaker. After all, who wants to look at the man who is effectively destroying your future?
