Is America slowly getting closer to a police state in this country? If you live in Stockton, CA and your name is Kenneth Wright, you may think that time has already come. At 6:00 AM on Tuesday, 15 SWAT officers broke down his front door, handcuffed him, put him and his three children, ages 3, 7 and 11, in a cruiser and commenced to search his house.
You may wonder why this man was wanted to deserve this kind of treatment: Murder? Armed Robbery? Rape? Drug crimes? No, it was for an overdue student loan, and to top it all off, the warrant was for his estranged wife.
According to News10, the US Department of Education, who evidently has the authority, issued the warrant. This should raise some serious questions about whether this type of action is necessary. This was not a dangerous criminal; could it have been handled by one or two officers? Is there any documented evidence anywhere of a person running from the law for an overdue student loan?
It is interesting how just three years ago, the Left was accusing the Bush Administration of creating a police state, complete with jack booted thugs, but it hasn't been until the Obama presidency that this has happened. Recall that the Federal Government has just taken over the student loan program in the past two years.
Is this what the future holds? A country where common, everyday citizens have to worry about the Police breaking down their doors for unpaid student loans? What is next, the local library sending out a SWAT team for an overdue book or Netflix coming after you for not returning a DVD? This is one more case of what the progressive left is leading us to. When they start using excessive police force for crimes which are not tied to any violence there is a serious problem in this country.
