The latest Public Policy Poll of likely 2012 Republican New Hampshire Primary voters shows Donald Trump closing in on current frontrunner Mitt Romney.
“Mitt Romney’s looked like the runaway favorite in all of our New Hampshire polling to date,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling (PPP). “Donald Trump’s the first person to hold him to a single digit lead. He really could prove to be a serious candidate if he gets into the race.”
Romney maintains a 27-21 percent lead over Trump, who finished second place in the poll. The results appear to have taken pollsters by surprise. A similar February 15 poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center found single digit support for The Donald. Reuters is now describing Trump as a "Wild Card" in the state's first in the nation presidential primary.
What Donald Trump has been saying on the campaign trail so far has been pretty wild. He's been trumping just about every other GOP presidential hopeful with his outrageous statements of support for the birther movement. The one exception is birther movement founder Andy Martin, who is borderline insane. Martin threatened to launch a "Chigago style 'bloodbath" against local GOP officials after they canceled his first and only presidential campaign appearance in New Hampshire.
A mind boggling 51 percent of Republican voters nationwide doubt President Obama's citizenship. That number is smaller in New Hampshire - 42 percent to be precise - but the latest Public Policy Poll found Trump leading Romney 22-21 percent among the birthers who do live here.
It's a bit frightening to think some voters might base their vote on an already debunked conspiracy theory. Photos of President Obama's birth certificate can be found on FactCheck.org. The website's staff viewed, touched, and probably even smelled the document in person. Regardless, lunatics like Andy Martin are eager to get their hands on the original copy, probably so they can burn it and then claim it never existed in the first place.
If past polls are any indication, Donald Trump's #2 ranking in New Hampshire won't last long. Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, and "Other" have all held that honor at one point in time.
