GOP Senator Jim Bunning Blocks Unemployment Extension

Unfortunately, he's done after this term, and the party has already all but abandoned him. He doesn't care, and he's just doing it to be a jerk. Obviously he's never had to struggle to pay his bills, or put food on the table. It's a shame he can't be arrested for crimes against humanity.

What can we do to US senators who have done a shitty job!!!!! And doesn't care what the average joe struggles through live.We do Not want health care we need extentions to unemploymenr so we are not homeless

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to this one. He has nothing to fear at this point. As far as the others, that's where our vote counts. We did it here in PA after a big pay raise scandal. Didn't get rid of all of them, but enough to send a very loud message to those who remained. It doesn't help now, but it is pretty much the only thing we can do. In the meantime, the more people who call/write/email their representatives, the better. Give them a warning. Maybe it will help. Better than nothing. I've been out of work since May 08. Been to more interviews than I can count. So, at this point, I'm one of the desperate too. Just trying to hold on and hoping that someone gets something done.

this man is a disgrace and no friend to the working "poor" of this country,and this should be a wake up call to all americans ,and to remind them that the republican party is no friend to the working "poor" of this country,and come november people should really think before they put more republicans in power,you would have thouht we had learned our lesson with the last 8 rotten years under a republican president i am a independent voter.

You can count on Sen. Bunning to object to anything related to unemployment benefits. He did it back in October, and he's doing it again. I wasn't paying attention at the time, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he was the one that delayed passage of the deadline renewal back in November and December of last year.

And that's all this legislation is - a deadline renewal. I'm currently on Tier 4, and to the best of my knowledge even without this extension I'll be allowed to continue collecting it until it's exhausted. And when it is, that's all there is.

Even if they do pass this bill, there's not a darn thing in it to help those like me. Everyone who ran out of benefits before Halloween last year will be completely out of benefits by the end of this month. They haven't even begun to address this problem.

Jim, I have a question...I have exhausted all of my unemployment benefits. I have received a total of 99 weeks, and I've been unemployed since April, 2008. I have been reading some blogs where people have been saying that the extensions everyone is talking about is just an extension to apply for benefits...is this right? They have absolutely no plans to add any more weeks of benefits. All they're doing is deciding whether or not to continue paying out Tiers 1-4. as things stand right now, whatever Tier people are getting today is the last one they'll see before this so-called extension is passed.

Maybe once it is they'll tackle our problem. I'm about 4 weeks away from exhausting Tier 4 myself.

Welcome fellow Michigander, My crew and I have wired a lot of homes and business around your area. (Back during the good times). Everyone is laid off now!

I am one of the millions of unemployed who rely on unemployment benefits to provide for my children. My unemployment was the result of a layoff and I have been searching desperately for a job for over a year. Unemployment compensation is the only thing keeping my head above water as I have depleted savings and investments just to keep from drowning. I find it hard to believe that anyone would unsympathetically deny desperately needed emergency benefits as millions of people are already in crisis mode struggling to make ends meet while being unable to find employment. This has caused me to lose all faith in the processes of our government. I am saddened and fearful for my situation and that of the millions of other Americans who find themselves in this unfortunate situation.

I don't know if it will help but I emailed Senator Bunning and my local congressmen. I can relate to your situation as I am a single mom who was laid off in January. I need my unemployment compensation even though it is far less than I was making. It's a disgrace the way things are turning out for the unemployed.

The Republicans says the economy will fix itself.
If you starve, well, you should have saved more while you worked.

That is their honest belief.

Obama PROMOTED & SIGNED a Pay-as-you-go bill. Thats the point Bunning was making but is lost on the dumbed down population. But, they didn't budge - just added more to the national debt.
He did not want to hold up unemployment - he wanted it paid for with cuts from elsewhere. This is something we consumers must do every day. Can't spend money WE don't have.

Do any of you guys know if the extension they are trying to pass right now is just an extension to apply for benefits, or is it an extension like last november?

It's just a change in date of when the benefits expire. They add absolutely nothing new. If passed, people will be able to progress from one Tier to the next. No plans are in the works to add new Tiers... and I'm hoping that the word "yet" will prove to be accurate.

I'm surprised you've exhausted yours already. I was laid off in Jan 2008, and I still have 3 weeks left. What state do you live in? I suspect you live in a state that, due to a lower than average unemployment rate, doesn't qualify for Tier 4. If so, you received no more than 93 weeks of benefits.

Or, failing that, you didn't receive the maximum number of weeks of Emergency Unemployment Benefits (EUB) for the same reason. As I recall, some states refused to accept it at all, while other states didn't qualify for the whole amount due to the state's unemployment rate.

You're right, I just counted, I have received 93 weeks total. I live in MN. I can't believe they aren't trying to approve another tier, what about everyone that has been unemployed long term...I hate this! I'm trying so hard to get a job, and I can't find anything!

Absolutely everyone who had run out of benefits by last Halloween has either, like you, exhausted everything available - or are like me only a few weeks away from doing so.

I believe that part of the problem is the confusion over precisely what is being worked on here. They're throwing around the word "extension" as if they're actually adding something. They're saying things like adding months of extension, or extending to the end of the year.

But rather than adding, they're deciding whether or not to SUBTRACT benefits. I wish they would use the word "renew" instead of "extend." Extend means to take what exists and make it longer. Renew means to keep using what you have. They're clearly talking about doing the latter.

I am an unemployed single mom who is trying to survive. It's difficult. I was laid off my job due to the economy. I've been looking for 2 months now and have had 1 telephone interview and 2 job in person interviews. I don't think Senator Bunning has a clue about what is going on. He's got a big salary and good government benefits. Why should he care? I've very angry and think our elected officials need to stop the bickering and solve the real problems we have in our country--high unemployment, rising costs for food, etc. I could go on and on. I see the same jobs advertised and they are very low paying. We need good paying jobs. I hope all the unemployed call Senator Bunning or email him to show their disgust.

I'd Very like to thank this guy in person. I'd like to shake his hand and see the look in his eyes when I tell him that I AM A FEDERAL EMPLOYEE! because of what he has done, my elderly mother, that has only SSI benefits goes without food tonight. I was able to use the last of my unemployment benefits to see that she is warm tonight. My wife and I do without heat, and food, to see that my Mom gets at least................................warm.......................She is 77 years old. I work for the US park service. We have been told here that no jobs will be open with the US park service untill June 2010........................
I have always been a loyal worker there, but we count on our elected officals to DO THE RIGHT THING! This guy doesn't want to do anything but finish ruining the country...............

The GOP in general cares only about corporate profits. The little guys such as us have no value. I used to be a Republican, but this mess they've gotten us into and their refusal to get us out of it has caused me to turn Democrat.

There is no talk of a Tier 5. Only whether or not Tiers 1 through 4 should be allowed to disappear.

If you haven't yet had a period of time where you also reported which two employers you've contacted that week, then yes you do have up to 20 weeks from the state after you've collected all Tiers.

Of course, that also depends upon whether or not your state has accepted these funds. They came from the feds with strings attached.

im working outa a working union hall im not required to apply for work i make 26 an hr i cant make that at mcdonalds i got way too many bills i live in ohio and ohio has a 20 week extension but im not getting 13 weeks for tier 3 only 10 cuz the way they figured it i was getting pa unemployment and they made mne try and get benefits in another state before theyd allow me to go into extension and ohio made it to where i was eligable i only qualified for 20 weeks and all my tiers were a couple weeks shorter than they shouldve been

I am also receiving unemployment benefits and I also was very angry that one senator from
Kentucky would blocked the extension from unemployment benefits. Preventing me and thousands of people who have worked all their lives to receive some help now from their government when we need it most. If he wanted to make a point about the deficit or from where the money was coming from he should have look for another avenue for him to make a point because this vote was wasted ,this vote meant food on the table for thousands of families and paying rent , electricity this is no time to use this specific situation of unemployment to make a point people need help there are no jobs out there.

I've been laid-off since April 09 after 17 years of work and find it hard to believe that these people in the senate and congress are making it so hard on the average person. We can call and e-mail until we are blue in the face they just erase or delete the message, there is no greater show of unity that a march to Washington. Well like many of you, I've just run out of unemployment benefits.

As it stands right now I will have no choice but to start selling off what little I have left in an effort to keep my home and food on the table. I've already spent hte last two winters without heat because of the cost.

The problem with selling things off is that most of what I could sell off are the tools that I need to be able to do my job. So once the economy picks back up and there's once again work to be had, I'd be out of luck because I wouldn't have the tools required to do my job. Does this make sense to any of you?

I honestly feel that if the political leaders don't get off their collective duffs, they're going to find that they've accomplished nothing more than to start the second American revolution. You can only push people so far before they're going to fight back. We did it back in 1776 and if the situation doesn't improve, we may end up having to do so yet again. It's strictly a matter of survival, and people will do just about anything to survive. History has shown this on many occasions and I'm sure that we'll see it again in the future.

EXACTLY WHAT UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS ARE ON THE LINE IN TERMS OF ALREADY SCHEDULED CHECKS NOT BEING ISSUED?--OR-- Is the issue one of people not being able to reapply-for the time being- for MORE EXTENSIONS of an existing claim?

I am in New York State and was recently confirmed as extended to a total of 60 weeks.

Is THAT extension in jeopardy,subject to being rescinded???


Are there people in New York State expecting to get an unemployment payment THIS WEEK who- now-will not get that check??

Tiers 1, 2, 3 and 4 are currently unavailable if you're not already collecting it. It is my understanding that you will be allowed to complete whatever Tier you're currently getting, but will be unable to advance to the next one.

I don't know what the status of the Fed/State funded Emergency Unemployment Benefits (EUB) package is. This may also be in jeopardy, but I don't know for sure.

We can blame him all we want but we need to blame all of these politians.. While they sit in a warm cozy home, eat the best of foods, dress themselves with designer clothes, their families are nice and warm , their children go to the best of schools. Their wives strut around and volunteer some free time to be a do gooder just to get their names in the paper as a social butterfly doing good deeds for the less fortunate... What a joke they are... Look, at how many of you that are hurting( my husband has also, been laid off since Feb. of 09.. His job was given to Mexicans( as they will work for less).. He too , is on his last extension ... He is drawing from another state whose unemployment rate is much lower than the state we live in.. He wont get as many extensions... He has been searching for work for at least 9 months... he didnt want to wait to the last minute to try and find something.... he has had no success... He is willing to take two part time jobs just to try and survive... we are already starting to get rid of a couple of luxuries such as eating a sub from a take out once a week... or going to Burger Kings, downsizing our satellite... anything to save a few dollars... We are thinking of getting rid of our house phone and if that goes our computer will go off to....
I have lived a long while and never have I ever seen this country in such a mess... There were always jobs in this area before, even when we went through a recession but not now...
Many on here want to blame the Bush administration but for those who have lived awhile... In this area especially, I have seen so many manufacturing jobs disappear,,Most of these jobs paid well above the average salary....but they are gone... SOme went south and most went overseas.... General Motors was bailed out but not everyone is lucky enough to work for them... I have heard many stories as to why, this is happening but the truth as I know it is simple.. It started way before Mr GW was in office... I dont know if the corporations got greedy, because they could get the work done cheaper by foreigners( much like slave labor) or if our city had to high of taxes( which is quite possible) and did nothing to give these factories and incentive to stay in this area... or maybe, it was a combination of both...
Instead, of them bickering about this darn health bill... They need to get their prioties straight... What good is health care, if we cant afford to eat..? If we are living in a cardboard box? At this point , I would rather have a job and be able to afford clean living conditions and then they can worry about trying to get this bill through.... Its a no brainer to us but I think its a power play for the Dems. at our expense... So, we can sit and blame Bunning, which I agree , his remark to me, is about as low as he can get...But what is fair for the goose should be fair for the gander.... Since, this economy is in bad shape , we should ask that a law be passed that his retirement should be restricted too... We simply cannot afford the many benefits that these fat creeps are going to get after they , have helped break the American families backs and continue to break up the American family... After all, Reid said, that in hard times, men beat their wives...and Reid knows all... so they are breaking up our family unit by men being under so much stress..
To me Congress is no more than CEO's giving themselves raises, expensive vacations, jets, whatever they want to do with our money... It actually gained the most steam under Reagan. He REALLY catered to the corporate sector. George Sr continued the trend. Clinton was useless. I don't know what he was trying to achieve, but he did nothing for us.

Actually, Norman, the best thing that could happen to this country is that it gets so far in debt that the dollar crumbles. Suddenly foreign currency would carry more weight here, and we'd see a lot more investing and more jobs.

Sure, things that are imported would skyrocket in price - but I see that as a GOOD thing. Products made here in the States wouldn't have their prices rise anywhere near as much.

Right now, a healthy country requires a weak dollar. Of course, the corporate bigwigs will do anything they can to prevent this. Since they have DOLLARS in the banks, they don't want to see the value of them drop.

I say to myself... the American people deserve better than this kind of treatment... The Electrical workers union in my town was nothing but a good ole boys club that demanded some kind of payoff for everything. I never was allowed to join. They wanted me to organize my old bosses business. My God, there were only three of us. Ron was an older retiree who kindly trained us youngsters at his home business. He was like a father to us. Organize his shop, HELL NO! It's like the Mafia took over the unions years ago.

I agree with you 100% Vickey we were thrown into the same thing as you are going through, so I understand, but from what I have heard about Bunning is he is wanting to know where the money is coming from, that seems like a good question to me, I understand people need there unemployment, my gosh how else are they going to live when they can't even buy a job today, but we should be allowed to know where they are going to get the money from to give this money out, I am not agreeing with him, but I do understand what he is saying, IF and sometimes that is a big word...if that is the reason he is holding out....

Mexicans have taken jobs for years from the American people because they work cheaper, I guess they are not worth as much in there minds....just not sure why they do it, it is like someone owning a trucking company and under biding eveyone else, until it costs them to run there business ....doesn't make since but there are a lot that think that way, they would rather lose it all just to have the work. Vickey, you are so correct! Especially agree with what is going on in congress. I mean you vote for these people and they don't do their jobs. They sit around and all they do is bicker with one another. I am so angry at all of them. People are really hurting right now. The job market is the worst I have ever seen.

I just called and told a staff member for Bunning what I thought. I was surprised that I was able to get through as when I have called before, all I got was a busy signal. Anyway I told staff member how angry I was with him and that he is a A-hole! She said she will pass my remarks along to him (yeah, I bet) I'm sure he has been getting a lot of calls lately but even if she doesn't pass my remarks along, it sure made me feel better

The quick way to pass something in the Senate is called "Unanimous Consent." All it takes is one objection and suddenly it isn't unanimous.

Honestly. I don't think that this person has ever struggled to put food on his table or worry about paying his bills. I am a mother of two and I am unemployed. I have to worry about what I am going to do about bills and putting food on the table. I am glad that worrying about food can kind of stop because I am on food stamps, but paying bills is another thing. This is my first time filing for unemployment and I have already been denied so unless this passes I don't know what to do about the bills.

Bunning should be tarred and feathered.

Bunning typifies the reason we need A Second American Revolution. One man is capable of negatively effecting the welfare of millions. It isn't just workers who are unemployed, but also their spouses and children. How about workers who make or sell the goods purchased by unemployment checks.
Last year when Kyl of Arizona delayed the unemployment extension he used the same tatics. That bill was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support. I believe the same result will occur here also.
However, we the American Public should not be placed in a position where one person can hold the nation hostage. Because we have allowed things to go out of control by not voting out the ineffective and worthless representatives and senators, we now have a congress that just doesn't work. We need to fix this. Revolt by voting the incumbents out.
I have a wife and four children of voting age. I can show them the advantages of voting the incumbents out. Some of our elected representatives have made their roles as our elected representatives thier right. Some have held no real other jobs and others have been there over 50 years. In that time our quality of life has decreased. I don't care if you are a democrat or republican. Our politicians have failed in carrying out the will of their employers and they need to be fired.

Glen, you are absolutely right. We need to vote the incumbents out. Bunning will be retiring but I would like to see him out immediately. We are being held hostage. I intend to revolt at the polls.

Both National Parties are putting up candidates that are, shall we say, 'less than statesmen' quality. Many of the Representatives are seeking the job as a stepping stone to becoming well-paid lobbyists when they leave office. A 5 year wait should be mandated before an elected official can become a lobbyist after 'serving the people'.

I think we need to start being accountable for where our money comes from and where it is going, it is just to bad there is not a place to go to find out, every single dime the government spends, how much for dinner partys, how much for every dime they spend, that alone would make them be held accountable for where and when and on what they spend, I am between a rock and a hard place on Bunning, one way I understand what he is saying the next I am torn because this is going to hurt a lot of people that can not find a job so this is all they have to live on, but is this going to add the debt or is it money set aside for unemployment, are we going to rob Paul to pay Peter, they have already stolen so much money from SS it is close to not being there much longer....then where we go, what do we do?

Jackie, you are right... Most American people can see this, but no one in DC is listening and they know that there is nothing we can do other than vote them out.... But some will soon forget... look at how some of them are voted back in over and over again... Smaller government and two terms for them is enough... OBama says, we have to tighten our belts but they dont tighter theirs... Waste and greed seems to be the only things these politians know how to do.... To see who can come out with the most taxpayers money.... They think they are exempt from paying taxes but yet we are supposed to pay our fair share... they waste money on pork barrel spending.. they spend money on all those jets and limos that they ride around in.. and the list goes on and on...
I understand fully Jackie and I am fed up with all of them... I think they dont do anything for any of us unless there is something for them in it....

Why do they always attack the down trodden and deprived. Why not cut 10% off all government salaries over 75,000.00 and if there is someone at or very near retirement, retire them. I can't understand how government officials manage departments, are they not thinking of these things 24/7? Because that is, what a manager does. In addition, I am sure there are plenty of government works bringing two incomes from government positions into one household over the 75K mark, so why not seek a way to adjust those folks instead of laying off or firing a single mom or dad.
To a few this may sound communist but to many its fair and balanced.
