Anyone else out there teed off about the anti McCain/Palin ugl picture ads here on Gather. Wonder who's paying for them--the more I'm learning about where the opposing party's money is coming from, the more I wonder who is putting tons of money into Gather to have the ugly ads.
Anyway we could make Gather advertising non political? We can still post our political thoughts but should the ads be on our pages that have nothing to do with politics?
What do you think?

I'd be angry if it was an ad given to the campaign, but then again if that's whom the "owners" of the site support why not?
The members of Gather have made it a point to be VERY political. My preference is to simply delete or ignore their messages or posts. So to say it's the Gather sites fault would be ludacris with all the posts that are so very, very politically oriented.
"Anyway we could make Gather advertising non political? We can still post our political thoughts but should the ads be on our pages that have nothing to do with politics?"
At least with the political articles we can ignore them or click on them but we can't do anything about the political ads. I don't mind ads for products, as a matter of fact I'm thinking of paying for an ad for my "Six Steps to FREE Cruises and Tours" ebook.
I can choose my articles, I can't choose my ads.
With the political ads Gather does have to make money.
I post to websites where I get paid for the ads on my pages, and to others where I don't. Here, I don't control the content, the ads or the money. If it bothered me I'd go elsewhere.
BTW - You might be overly sensitive - shrug - I haven't noticed the ads. Besides, in less then 2 weeks this will be over - all but the shouting, anyway
You mean McCain/Palin are actually really pro-choice and the ads are a lie ???
Any advertisement that RELIES upon a bad interface to be effective is obtrusive and more likely to have a negative than positive impact.
As for the anti-McCain/Palin ads, I happen to agree with the message, so it bothers me less since it irks all the anti-choice folks. ;)
Coffee Mate, ARE YOU LISTENING????
As a few members above have suggested, we are an advertising supported site. Like television stations and newspapers, we accept political advertising as a component of our revenue stream.
To be fair to all involved, we accept advertising from all political parties and advocacy organizations (assuming they meet our Terms of Service). We have reached out to both campaigns and to advocacy groups introducing them to advertising opportunities on Gather. We would welcome the opportunity to work with a diverse group of political advertisers, sharing a wide variety of perspectives, both before and after the election.

If someone feels a strong need to talk about abortion, fine. But three weeks before a national election, when partisan feelings are at their highest? I'd like to hear, personally, from anyone who had their views changed during that debate.
The McCain campaign, or the Republican campaign committees, or their 527 groups could certainly buy or bid for advertising space here. It's not as if this is a public service space.
The ads I hate the most are those AOL travel ads that eat up my bandwidth and memory resources. Dag, they bog down my page loads mightily.
Proud new Democrat, voting for Obama Nov. 4.
I just try to tune it out these days.
:) have a good weekend everyone!
I’ll be glad when Gather fixes the email notifications. I wanted to thank you for your comment on the ghost story (sort of) about my Dad.
