According to Rasmussen's new national daily tracking poll out today, John Edwards has now tied Barack Obama for second place in the race for the Democratic nomination. Obama's popularity seems to have fallen precipitously since earlier in the year when he was tied with Hillary Clinton.
Edwards has also been leading in the key state of Iowa in most polls for many months.

Edwards has been consistently shown to be the most electable Democratic candidate in national polls. He will whoop any Republican easily. In head to head matchups, he always beats them by the most. He has virtually no baggage, except that which is made up by Republicans because they are afraid of him.
Clinton is the one the Democrats must avoid nominating. Republicans would LOVE to run against her. On the other hand, she is very effective in the Senate and she should stay there.
I admire your conviction, but it would be better placed elsewhere, with a better candidate more deserving of your admiration.
Edwards would be much more genuine, and much more in line with his causes : poverty, the downtrodden, health care, etc., if only he wasn't such a little Rich Boy. For at least the next 6 months, he should get rid of that great big house in NC, fly coach class with the commoners, and be humble. No expensive froofing to look good either. He just needs to be an average, everyday guy if he's going to speak from the angle of a poverty fighter.

Don, nice to see you too! I'll see you at the Illinois Democratic party meeting if you care to join me. I'll be the one angering the Left Wing - you won't be able to miss me....lol.
If I recall correctly, the last Iowa poll I saw showed a whole percentage point difference between 1st and 2nd place and the same between 2nd and third and over 30 percent undedided or supporting other candidates. That would suggest Edwards has actually lost ground in Iowa.
In national polls, Edwards is gaining some, but Obama is losing more. Hillary has gained some of that support, but it's because she is the "default" candidate in terms of what people hear from the mainstream media. Hillary's support is very soft. Most people I've heard supporting her haven't thought much about it yet and are going with what they hear in the news. Edwards's support is mostly rock solid, and he can only gain from here.
Bret, spare me the stupid "hypocrite" argument. Rich or poor, saying that we should help the poor and then going out and taking action to actually help them does not make a person a hypocrite. It makes him a man of his word. John Edwards is the most honest politician I have ever met and he stands by his word.
Hillary's support is not that soft, you only want it to be. If it were that soft there would be more fluctuation in the polls, not a steady gain. Hillary is such a strong candidate that even people who do not want to vote for her for personal reasons or other reasons, are forced to admit she appears to be the best candidate to be the next President of the United States and they may have to vote for Hillary simply because they put our nation's future and well-being above their personal preferences.
As for the Iowa polls I had to go back to a poll conducted on 8/3 to find one which had Edwards leading in Iowa by more than 7 percent and not only was that the only one in which he led by more that one percent, most of the other showed Hillary leading except for the one or two that showed Obama leading by a percentage point or two. I had to go back to June and earlier to consistantly see polls that show Edwards leading.
Edwards is leading by 8 percent in Iowa in a very recent poll, published in Time Magazine. When the 2nd tier candidates (some of whom will likely be out of the race by the Iowa caucus) are included, Edwards still leads by 5 percent. This poll came out today.
I couldn't agree with you more. I've been a lifelong Democrat, and worked on the 1st Clinton-Gore campaign (in a western state that will remain nameless) when I was 18 and in college.
I ALWAYS vote straight ticket, because I know it's a numbers game. Every now and then there maybe a Republican I'm fine with, however if I vote for them that puts another tally mark in the "R" column and I can't aide their numbers like that.
Therefore if the choice is Hillary, that's who I'll vote for; but I don't think she'll be able to win. And I hope we can come up with a combination that can do so. I hope that Hillary isn't on the ticket, not because I don't like her...because I do. I just think that she's such a polarizing figure and large numbers of people don't like her. I think in order to win the presidency you can't have large numbers of people that don't like you. (With that said GWB is sitting in the White House now, so what do I know.)
I have always thought John Edwards was the best choice for the ticket and hope his momentum keeps growing. If he is the Democratic nominee I think we we'll win. Please let us win...We can't keep going on as we have been. I have a son and this isn't the country I wan't him to be brought up in.
