PREAMBLES & CONSTITUTIONAL 'LOOK SEES'
A few weeks ago I decided to take a hard look at the CONSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURES of the Islamic States that were at present involved with the mess in Iraq. I had been reading along with the coming then of the TURKISH elections, the coming meetings in ISRAEL and PALESTINE about the Fatah-Hamas mess, and the seeming possible alterations with respect to the neighborhood disturbances with Iran and Iraq. I began a search and launched out into a creation of computer files that would add to my perspectives. Lots of reading and thinking!
I began my quest for additional knowledge with a question in mind: Will I learn anything if I focus upon the idea that the varied CONSTITUTIONS that are at present operative in the major countries (e.g. Iraq, Iran, Mauritania, Turkey, Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Syria and so on) and will they give me a way to think about prospects for PEACE or WAR? I began reading the PREAMBLES first, to see if I could catch the flavor of the way that the given NATION-CULTURE saw itself through its own major LEGAL way of looking at itself. I'll have more to say about such 'insights' (if I can glamorize them in that way with that implied logic) at a later time.
RUSSIAN HISTORY AND THE TURKISH ELECTION BACKGROUND
A week or more ago the TURKISH problem began to get Press attention. One of my major sources of information and understanding, is to carefully read "THE ECONOMIST" along with watching our evening TV news, along with sundry other stuff like blogs, radio, and newspapers. I was a bit baffled by what I began to pick up, but got clarification as I began to try to link up 'this with that'. One such concept that arose was being discussed as 'scientific creationism'; another as 'thought crimes'.
Years ago I had been interested in the 'cold war' logic and the difficulties between the USA and the then USSR. As an economist of sorts I had picked up key impressions that there were curious problems in the Bolshevik/Menshovik debates. These were going on before the Russian Revolution got deeply engrossed in deep deliberations about the philosophic doctrine of 'logical positivism' which was closely linked to another lurking issue -- CREATIONISM. Communism was and is all about Materialism and Non-GOD. The associated deepest issue: 'WHAT IS A PERSON"? Another: "FREE or SLAVE"?
Lenin did not deal with the issues as a religious one (to my present knowledge), but as a pragmatic one. The so-called Austrian School of scientist-engineer-economists were bringing to light the problem which is unfurling now. MATERIALITY and the way that COMPLEXITY muddied up the ENTITY (living complex 'things') creating issues in Evolution. Materialism as a philosophic issue is NOT a simple one with which to play. Religionists bent on exploiting the GOD-LINKAGES in the developing arguments could easily point to the Book of Job in the Old Testament (as well as Genesis of course) as a defense that had the certainty that (1) GOD created ALL, and (2) GOD built our extant and evolving UNIVERSE that evolved and is still evolving, there was the relatively awesome issue of whether GOD had instantly created -- especially -- we human beings for some special -- to be slowly revealed -- role! Was creation a 'boom' event' or a time-laden one? An EVOLUTIONARY one with 'the use of information applications with materiality' to be understood far more fully than word and literary explorations. We humans had to walk downstream, through long time stretches, toward SCIENCE and MEASUREMENT and EMPIRICAL THEORY BUILDING!
Lenin sought (and proceeded) to destroy his Menshevik opponents with his mastery of words and argumentation and political guile and stamina. Marxism, as he saw it, would never appear in Russia (and the USSR) if the Mensheviks got the upper hand in the embryonic 'intellectual design' argument of that day. Lenin 'won' and the WORLD was handed new insights and new problems. Intellectual Evolution was on the march toward increased awarenesses; consciousnesses; consciences, via MUCH PAIN.
TURKEY AS AN ISLAMIC, SECULAR STATE HISTORICALLY
But TURKEY became a CONSTITUTIONALLY secular nation state precisely because Ataturk, their first president, found a way to make ECONOMIC PROGRESS far more important then, than the dominance then of Islamic Sharii'a LAW. He always maintained -- and it is more or less stated in the Turkey Constitution -- that the real reason for the move toward secularization was to take advantage of the foreseen MATERIAL and CREATIVE (involving FREEDOM ISSUES) advantages of a secular DEMOCRATIC organization of their government, when they became full-fledged members of the developing and eventually then, developed states of our WORLD.
There were formidable difficulties ahead from 1923 until yesterday and its coming tomorrows. They, the difficulties, had to do with the likelihood that the well established, time deep, religious (Islamic) ideas would not disappear from the hearts and minds and hands of Turkey's citizens (it always remained a MUSLIM NATION, and still does). In the future , it was guessed, that GOOD LEADERS might appear with full Islamic credentials (i.e. TRUE BELIEVERS) who would as high, secularly inclined, government and private sector LEADERS accomplish the NATION BUILDING that Ataturk clearly saw was indeed possible. Turkey has seen fine NATION GROWING since 1923 under its secularist commitments. And this now just past election seems to suggest that it has also retained, in a major way, its Islamic Basic Character, religiously and theologically. There seems to be a human urge there to try to 'live with GOD/ALLAH' in peace on this glorious EARTH of ours.
ENLIGHTENED LEADERS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN INSTITUTIONAL ARRANGEMENTS
THERE NEED BE, LOGICALLY, NO INHERENT OPERATIONAL CONFLICT WITHIN A GOVERNMENT LIKE IRAN's (which has a government design with a Religious Leader in the real TOP JOB, and a religious secular leader in the President's JOB) OR a nation state like TURKEY's -- if the LEADERSHIP and LEADERS are deeply committed moral and religious persons operating at top levels as excellent administrators who have performed well and are significantly and properly experienced. In IRAN the top leader is a religious person, there to preserve human morality, and its President is a less well trained religious person, but also a believing Muslim. In Turkey under Ataurk the President was not a religious personage--but IF in the future, he or she will be so, the ONE LEADER in Turkey can be the equal to the COLLECTIVE TWO in IRAN. People QUALITIES, PERSPECTIVES and SKILLS will make all the difference!
WHAT WILL BE THE EMERGENT LESSONS FROM THE TURKISH ELECTIONS FOR ISLAM?
THE LESSONS OF THIS ELECTION MAY BE PROFOUND. If elected leaders were tested and truly 'believing' folk with deep moralities, the form of government might even be secondary. Democracies might have no advantage at all! There have been in HISTORY many great leaders (aristocrats and democratit personages) who devoted their lives to the effort to be servants to ALL of the people, with little sense of self, and thus -- by definition -- full of SELFLESSNESS with a desire to do GOD/ALLAH's WILL. The results of the Turkish election point to the possible RE-TURN to that blissful possibility: the VERY BEST PERSONS SERVING IN THE MAJOR ROLES OF LEADERSHIP-RESPONSIBILITY intending always to 'do the right'. The real question is the question of 'HOW we find such persons and then how we install them?'. Here in the USA just think about our next President and wonder: WHO? This is 'serious business' stuff! Do our presnt selection methods do an even adequate job?
This is the crux of problems today under the failures of seeming selfish democratic 'ideals'. Dominant self-interests combining with narrow human and humane perspectives does not bring into power (always?) the kinds of human beings into LEADERSHIP POWER that truly understand the moral ideas associated with the deep meanings of SELFLESSNESS. Responsibility to OTHERS! Concern and Compassion and Cooperation should be dominant in LEADERSHIP behaviors, NOT SELFISHNESS and UNCOOPERATIVENESS.
THE FOCUS OF BELIEF: SPIRITUALITY AND/OR MATERIALITY?
We'll get back to the issues of EVOLUTION, and EXISTENTIAL WONDER, and the eternal presence of a CREATING UNIVERSAL PROCESS (GOD? WHAT?) at another time. The TURKS are on their way to important views of OUR EARTH's tomorrows. The profound implications relating to 'scientific creationism' are' out of the bottle' for the Islamic States and for the rest of our WORLD too! ALL is ever changing. COMPLEX EVOLUTION is always and everywhere in PROCESS! The necessity to learn, evermore, is to be our human burden and our greatest joy, it seems. 'ONWARD and UPWARD' must be our vision! There is a future to be joined and won!
